1/7Interpretation
Jakob Kullberg's adaptation of Per Nørgård's viola concerto for cello includes his own composed cadenza and added details, created in consultation with the composer.
Performer Biography
Jakob Kullberg has a uniquely close collaboration with Danish composer Per Nørgård, who has composed his entire cello output of the last 20 years specifically for Kullberg.
Composition History
Per Nørgård's Viola Concerto No. 1, Remembering Child, alludes to Samantha Smith, a 13-year-old girl who advocated for nuclear disarmament and died in a 1985 plane crash.
Compositional Technique
The opening of Per Nørgård's Remembering Child features a heterophonic structure where all instruments play the same line at different speeds, reminiscent of Nørgård's 'infinity series'.
Recording & Production
The recordings for this album were made at two different locations: the Philharmonic Studio, MediaCityUK, England for Nørgård's Between and Saariaho's Notes on Light, and the Witold Lutosławski Concert Studio, Warsaw, Poland for Nørgård's Remembering Child.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Composer Per Nørgård previously stated he composed in all genres except concertos, but the intense atmosphere of the 1980s, with punk, neo-expressionism, and postmodernism, led him to begin writing them.
Performer Biography
Cellist Jakob Kullberg is praised by The Strad magazine for his "staggering control of tone – sometimes elegant or glassy, at other times angry or pleadingly reedy."
