Respighi possessed a keen eye for the fantastic, seeing what stories could be found or invented from older musical works, as exemplified by his ballet "Boutique fantasque" based on Rossini's "sins of youth."

Compositional Technique

Almost a third of Ottorino Respighi's comprehensive catalogue of works consists of 'transcriptions' or arrangements of older music, ranging from simple settings to full orchestral versions.

Composition History

Ottorino Respighi resigned from his prestigious position as director of the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in 1924 to dedicate himself to composition and teaching.
