The 'Trittico botticelliano' was inspired by three famous Botticelli paintings from the Uffizi Gallery in Florence: 'La Primavera', 'L'adorazione dei Magi', and 'La nascita di Venere'.

Composition History

The titles for Respighi's 'Vetrate di chiesa' (Church Windows) were decided after the music was composed and orchestrated, based on images the music evoked for Respighi, his wife, and their friend Claudio Guastalla.

Composer's Artistic Vision

Respighi had a strong interest in older music, which he incorporated into his own compositions, influenced by his teacher Luigi Torchi, a musicologist specializing in 14th- to 18th-century music.
