This Revueltas project was created in close collaboration with Professor Roberto Kolb-Neuhaus, a faculty member of the Escuela Nacional de Música of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) and chief editor of the new critical edition of Revueltas's oeuvre.

Historical Context

Revueltas visited an anti-fascist congress in civil war-ravaged Spain in 1937/38 as secretary-general of the LEAR (League for Revolutionary Artists and Writers), supporting the republican cause with his compositions.

Composer Biography

Silvestre Revueltas, the composer featured on this album, was asked by Carlos Chavez, Mexico's most important musical authority at the time, to be his assistant with the newly established Orquesta Sinfónica de México.

Composition History

Some compositions on this album are 'new' works that recently emerged from Revueltas's musical estate, while a newly discovered score was used for his famous work, Homenaje a Garcia Lorca.

Performer Biography

Juan Carlos Tajes, the reciter on this album, is a singer and actor born in Montevideo, Uruguay, who has lived in the Netherlands since 1971 and is known for his tango performances.

Performer Biography

Werner Herbers, the conductor of the Ebony Band, was appointed principal oboe of the Royal Concertgebouworchestra in 1970 and was co-leader of the Netherlands Wind Ensemble until 1988.
