Rheinberger was a prolific composer and refined teacher, training musicians of great caliber such as Richard Strauss and Wilhelm Furtwängler.
Recording & Production
This album features two different organs: the Zanin organ at the Church of S. Quirino, Udine, Italy, for the choral pieces, and the Goršič organ at the Church of Maria Ausiliatrice, Vipava, Slovenia, for the organ works.
Critical Reception
Despite being one of the most respected musicians in 19th-century Germany, Rheinberger's popularity faded after the First World War, with a 'Rheinberger Renaissance' only beginning toward the end of the 20th century.
Compositional Technique
Rheinberger's Organ Sonata No. 19 in G minor, Op. 193, incorporates a melody from Guillaume de Machaut's 13th-century song 'J'aim la fleur de valor' in its second movement, titled 'Provencalisch'.
