Rheinberger was an influential teacher at the Munich Conservatoire, with notable students including Engelbert Humperdinck, Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari, and Wilhelm Furtwängler.

This album marks the first recording of both Rheinberger's Sonata for violin and piano No.1 Op.77 and Sonata for piano and violin No.2 Op.105.

Thomas Schrott performs on a valuable Nicola Amati violin from 1675, generously lent by the Festival Strings Lucerne Foundation.
