Wolfgang Rihm, born in 1952, began composing at a young age, learning from Eugen Werner Velte while still in high school, and later from Klaus Huber and Karlheinz Stockhausen.

The title Two Other Movements signifies that each new work is a commentary on the preceding one, making them a continuation of earlier compositions.
