Composer's Artistic Vision

Rodrigo's Cántico de la esposa, based on a text by St John of the Cross, expresses the composer's own adverse experiences of separation from his wife by comparing divine and earthly love.

Maximiano Valdés, the conductor, has held positions as Music Director of the Orquesta Sinfonica del Principado de Asturias and Chief Conductor of both the orchestra and opera at the Teatro Municipal in Santiago, Chile.

Composer Biography

Joaquín Rodrigo, the composer, lost his sight completely within a few years after an outbreak of diphtheria in 1905, when he was four years old.

Compositional Technique

In Cantos de amor y de guerra, Rodrigo intentionally used simple harmony and restrained orchestration to allow the melody of the romances to stand out, suitable for a vihuela or a much reduced ensemble.

Composer's Artistic Vision

Joaquín Rodrigo considered Cántico de la esposa (Song of the Bride), composed in 1934, to be his best vocal work.

Joaquín Rodrigo studied composition in Paris with Paul Dukas, a master of early twentieth-century French music, who greatly influenced Rodrigo's orchestration.
