WISDOM's Sources was conceived during the early months of the COVID pandemic, partly in response to the isolation and anxiety Reynolds felt.
Composer Biography
WISDOM's Sources, a duo for violin and viola, was composed for Irvine Arditti and Ralf Ehlers of the Arditti Quartet, coinciding with Reynolds's 90th birthday in July 2024.
Recording & Production
WISDOM's Sources was recorded in July 2024 at the Conrad Prebys Music Center, UC San Diego, with Christian Cummings as recording engineer.
Compositional Technique
In WISDOM's Sources, Reynolds reinforces the character of each source of wisdom through fleeting musical allusions, including ancient Greek chorus melody, phrases from John Cage's Eight Whiskus, and references to Robert Johnson's Cross Road Blues.
Composition History
Both works on this album grew out of intimate collaborations with performers long entwined with Reynolds's creative life.
