Steingrímur Rohloff's Concerto Grosso was designed to unite four distinguished soloists — hornist Stefan Dohr, trombonist Jesper Busk Sørensen, trumpeter Gábor Tarkövi, and tuba player Jens Bjørn-Larsen — in a single work.
Interpretation
Before writing the concerto, composer Steingrímur Rohloff visited the soloists in Berlin to tailor his music to their individual styles and capture their artistry.
Composition History
The Concerto Grosso was commissioned by the Aalborg Symphony Orchestra, the orchestra performing on this recording.
Compositional Technique
This Concerto Grosso is thought to be the first concertante work of its kind, featuring solo horn, tuba, trombone, and trumpet.

Composer's Artistic Vision
Composer Steingrímur Rohloff believes there is much more experimentation to be done in harmony, stating, 'I decided that you have to write your own harmonies based on characteristics, expression and implication.'
