The Fifth Symphony was composed during World War II, started in 1944 and completed the following year, as Ropartz, like many of his generation, lived through two world wars.

Sebastian Lang-Lessing, the conductor, has been the Musical Director of the Orchestre Symphonique et Lyrique de Nancy since 1999 and also serves as Musical and Artistic Director of the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra since 2003-04.
Composer Biography
Ropartz initially studied law to respect his family's wishes before pursuing a musical career, entering the Paris Conservatoire in 1885.

Ropartz was a pupil of César Franck, and Franck's influence, particularly chromaticism and cyclic procedures, predominated in Ropartz's compositions until around 1904.

During the Occupation, Ropartz expressed his opposition to the enemy's presence by composing two songs with significant texts and immersing himself in religious music.

The recordings for this album were made in Nancy, Salle Poirel, with Symphony No. 2 recorded in December 2005 and Symphony No. 5 in September 2004.
