Maria Callas's performance as Fiorilla in this opera in October 1950 brought her to the attention of Luchino Visconti, a renowned Italian film and theatre director, who then dreamed of working with her.

This recording of Rossini's Il turco in Italia was made in 1954, and Maria Callas also recorded four other complete operas and two recital discs in the same year.

The original tapes of this recording were newly remastered at Abbey Road Studios in 2014.
