Composer Biography

Gioachino Rossini, a successful operatic composer, was born in Pesaro in 1792 to a brass-player father and a singer mother.

Composition History

Rossini's 'Péchés de vieillesse' (Sins of Old Age) are a series of pieces composed during his last ten years, some based on earlier works, others for informal performances, or simply written as the mood took him.

Performer Biography

Alessandro Marangoni, the pianist on this album, studied piano with honors and also graduated with honors in philosophy from the Università di Pavia.

Composer's Artistic Vision

Rossini grouped volumes four to eight of his 'Péchés de vieillesse' as 'Un peu de tout. Recueil de 56 morceaux semi-comiques pour le piano,' dedicating them to 'pianists of the fourth class, to which I have the honour to belong,' showing his modest humor.

Album & Artwork

The sixth volume of Rossini's 'Péchés de vieillesse' is titled 'Album pour les enfants dégourdis' (Album for Smart Children) and contains twelve pieces.

This recording was made at the Auditorium di Mortara, Pavia, Italy, from May 13 to 16, 2007, and features a Steinway & Sons piano from the Angelo Fabbrini collection.
