Compositional Technique

The fourth volume of Rossini's 'Péchés de vieillesse' features pieces named after dessert items (figs, almonds, raisins, hazelnuts) and hors d'œuvres (radishes, anchovies, gherkins, butter), each with descriptive musical characteristics.

Gioachino Rossini, a successful operatic composer, was born in Pesaro in 1792 to a brass-player father and a singer mother.

Performer Biography

Alessandro Marangoni also gave over a hundred concerts for the Second Life virtual platform and won the prestigious Amici di Milano International Prize for Music in 2007.

Composition History

Rossini's 'Péchés de vieillesse' (Sins of Old Age) were composed during his last ten years, some based on earlier works, some for informal gatherings, and others written as the mood took him.

Composer's Artistic Vision

Rossini grouped volumes four through eight of his 'Péchés de vieillesse' as 'Un peu de tout. Recueil de 56 morceaux semi-comiques pour le piano', dedicating them to 'pianists of the fourth class, to which I have the honour to belong'.

Performer Biography

Alessandro Marangoni, the pianist on this album, has performed extensively across Europe, America, and China, and has recorded the complete piano works of Rossini for Naxos.
