1/7Composition History
Sigismondo was Gioachino Rossini's thirteenth opera, yet it was among his least performed works from its 1814 premiere.
Critical Reception
Despite the orchestra's applause during rehearsals, the public found Sigismondo boring at its premiere, though they did not boo out of respect for Rossini.
Recording & Production
This recording was made live at the Trinkhalle, Bad Wildbad, Germany, as part of the XXVIII ROSSINI IN WILDBAD Festival in July 2016.
Composer's Artistic Vision
In Sigismondo, Rossini pushed boundaries by making characters individuals rather than types, with music reflecting their psychology and coloratura expressing inner feelings.
Compositional Technique
Rossini reused much of the music from Sigismondo in later successful operas, including Elisabetta, Torvaldo e Dorliska, Barbiere, Cenerentola, and Adina.
Compositional Technique
The overture to Sigismondo is thematically connected to music heard later in the opera, contributing to the work's sense of unity.
Performer Biography
Antonino Fogliani, the conductor of this recording, was appointed music director at Rossini in Wildbad in 2011.
