Rudolf Tobias (1873-1918) was the first Estonian composer to earn a degree in composing, studying organ and composition at the St Petersburg Conservatoire.

Tobias's oratorio "Jonah" was extensively revised and orchestrated in Western Europe between 1908 and 1909, and premiered in Leipzig with the composer conducting.
