Antonio Sacchini, though virtually forgotten today, was considered one of the greatest operatic composers by his contemporaries, with his operas Il Cid and Tamerlano receiving high praise.

Composer's Artistic Vision

St Philip Neri, the subject of this oratorio, was instrumental in the development of the musical genre of oratorio by encouraging simple strophic devotional songs in the vernacular at his prayer meetings.

Antonio Sacchini's oratorio, L'abbandono delle ricchezze di S. Filippo Neri, premiered in February 1765 at the Collegium Germanicum et Hungaricum, an elite seminary in Rome.
