Performer Biography
Vox Clamantis is a vocal ensemble founded in 1996 by Jaan-Eik Tulve, who studied Gregorian chant in Paris in the 1990s.
Composition History
Francis Poulenc's Quatre Motets pour un temps de pénitence (1938-39) were composed during the somber years leading up to the Second World War.
Critical Reception
Vox Clamantis has received numerous awards, including a Grammy for their participation in Arvo Pärt's 'Adam's Lament' and a Diapason d'or for their recording of Liszt's Via crucis.
Compositional Technique
Maurice Duruflé's Quatre Motets sur des thèmes grégoriens (1960) explicitly feature the Eucharistic dimension, and the composer stated the entire cycle could be performed during a Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament.
