Schmitt's incidental music for Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra was initially performed as ballet scenes between acts of a new production at the Paris Opéra in 1920.

Florent Schmitt, the composer, studied under Massenet and Fauré at the Paris Conservatoire and was a close friend of Erik Satie and Maurice Ravel.
Cultural Impact
The principal dancer playing Cleopatra in the 1920 Paris Opéra production, Ida Rubinstein, later inspired Maurice Ravel's famous Boléro.
Composition History
Schmitt's symphonic study 'Le Palais hanté' was inspired by Stéphane Mallarmé's Symbolist translation of Edgar Allan Poe's poem 'The Haunted Palace'.
