Othmar Schoeck, the composer, spent most of his life in Zurich after studying there and in Leipzig.

Schoeck's brother, Walter, an amateur cellist, helped him during the composition of his operas by playing vocal lines on his cello from fresh sketches.

Schoeck decided to compose his Cello Sonata after hearing his Cello Concerto performed for his 70th birthday, which reminded him of playing Beethoven sonatas with his brother.

The Cello Concerto, though absolute music, has vocal origins, with the solo cello often 'singing' long melodic lines reminiscent of Schoeck's songs.
Instruments
Christian Poltéra, the cellist, performs on an Andreas Guarnerius cello from 1675 with a Charles Peccatte bow.
