Schubert & Kurtág
Did you know?
1/6Composer's Artistic Vision
Jonathan Biss finds a natural pairing between Schubert and György Kurtág, a Hungarian composer born in 1926, due to Kurtág's deep roots in the past and his sensitivity.
Recording & Production
This album was recorded live at Wigmore Hall, London, on May 12, 2009.
Interpretation
Jonathan Biss requested no applause at the start of the concert to maintain the mysterious and otherworldly mood of Schubert's C major Sonata.
Performer Biography
Pianist Jonathan Biss is the third generation in a family of musicians; his grandmother, Raya Garbousova, was the cellist for whom Samuel Barber composed his Cello Concerto.
Composition History
Schubert's Piano Sonata in C major D. 840, known as the 'Reliquie', was left incomplete and consists of only two movements.
Compositional Technique
Schubert's A major Sonata's first movement features an unorthodox development section that draws its material from a tiny figure at the end of the exposition, rather than the main themes.
