Did you know?
1/7Performer Biography
The Swedish Chamber Orchestra, Örebro, founded in 1995 with 38 musicians, is committed to developing its 'surprising' and 'fresh' sound and has been led by music director Thomas Dausgaard since 1997.
Composition History
Schubert's Symphony No. 8, the 'Unfinished,' remained a two-movement torso, possibly because Schubert was unsatisfied with his attempts to match the innovation of the first two movements.
Composition History
Robert Schumann discovered Schubert's 'Great' C major Symphony in 1839, believing it to be the post-Beethovenian symphony that would show a new direction for the genre.
Compositional Technique
The 'Great' C major Symphony is nicknamed 'Great' due to its status as a masterwork, its goal of being a 'great symphony,' and its almost hour-long duration, which was unprecedented for a purely instrumental symphony at the time.
Performer Biography
Thomas Dausgaard, principal conductor of the Swedish Chamber Orchestra, also serves as chief conductor of the Danish National Symphony Orchestra/DR since August 2004 and frequently guest conducts leading orchestras worldwide.
Composition History
The 'Unfinished' Symphony was not premiered until December 17, 1865, 37 years after Schubert's death, due to its manuscript being a closely guarded treasure of his friend, composer Anselm Hüttenbrenner.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Schubert's 'Great' C major Symphony is the only one he completed after 1818, as he aimed to articulate his own symphonic form, distinct from Beethoven's, by incorporating Lied-style thematicism.
