The Scharoun Ensemble Berlin was founded in 1983 by four young members of the Berliner Philharmoniker.
Composer Biography
At the time of composing the Octet, Schubert was suffering from syphilis, which he likely knew about since late 1822, leading to physical and emotional distress.
Composition History
Schubert composed his Octet in F Major in February and March 1824, intending it as a step towards writing a great symphony.
Recording & Production
This album was recorded in January 2025 in the Chamber Music Hall at the Philharmonie Berlin, which has been the Scharoun Ensemble's home since its opening in 1987.

Composition History
The Octet was commissioned by Ferdinand Count Troyer, an amateur clarinettist and chief steward to Archduke Rudolf, who requested a work similar to Beethoven's popular Septet.
Compositional Technique
Schubert's Octet is structured with six movements, similar to Beethoven's Septet, and its expansive, multi-movement layout also connects it to the tradition of serenade music.
