Schubert's last two piano sonatas, D 959 and D 960, were composed only weeks before his death in November 1828, alongside the C minor Sonata D 958, forming a trilogy.

Schubert intended to dedicate this trilogy of sonatas to his famous contemporary, the virtuoso pianist and Mozart pupil Johann Nepomuk Hummel.
Critical Reception
Unlike his popular Impromptus and Moments musicaux, Schubert's piano sonatas, including these, remained largely unnoticed for many years after their publication.

This recording was made in February 2020 at Kulturzentrum Immanuel, using a Steinway D 274 piano.

Hans-Jürg Strub, the pianist on this recording, is also a passionate educator, teaching at the Zurich University of the Arts for over 30 years.
