Composition History
Many of Schumann's duo works on this album, including the Adagio and Allegro, Fantasiestücke, Drei Romanzen, and Fünf Stücke im Volkston, were composed in the highly productive year of 1849.
Recording & Production
This album includes a world premiere recording of Gabriel Schwabe's 2017 arrangement of the Intermezzo from the F-A-E Sonata for cello and piano.
Interpretation
The performer, Gabriel Schwabe, aimed to combine the 'romanticism, spirit, freshness and humour' described by Clara Schumann with the singing lyricism of the melodic lines, while giving a lightness to the texture and interplay between cello and orchestra.
Compositional Technique
The Intermezzo from the F-A-E Sonata, originally for violin and piano, derives its musical material from violinist Joseph Joachim's personal motto, 'Frei aber einsam' (free but alone), which translates to the notes F, A, and E.

Schumann's music and life embodied many principal characteristics of Romanticism, and he also made a name for himself as a writer and editor of the Neue Zeitschrift für Musik, a journal he launched in 1834.
