Composition History
The Album of Songs for the Young, Op. 79, was composed during the politically turbulent Dresden May rising of 1849, forcing Schumann and his family to flee to Bad Kreischa.

The theme of spring, present in almost a third of the songs in Op. 79, served as a metaphor for the hoped-for political 'spring of the people' during the period from 1815 to the 1848 revolution.
