Ensemble GEORI, based in Seoul, was founded by composer-pianist Jared Redmond and traditional daegeum bamboo flute performer Dasom Baek, and mixes Korean traditional and Western classical instruments.
Composer Biography
Sehyung Kim, born in 1987 in Almaty, Kazakhstan, studied composition at the Moscow Conservatory and later pursued his master's degree at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz.
Composition History
Composer Sehyung Kim's engagement with the sijo form marked the end of a creative crisis, inspired by Russian composer Dmitri Kourliandski (b. 1976) who encouraged him to explore smaller forms.
Interpretation
In these pieces, the selection of precise notes is left to the performers, allowing the sonic material to be rebuilt with each new musician while maintaining the overall form.
Instruments
An e-bow is incorporated into all three pieces on the album, enabling the pianist to perform the material fully and creating pulses through interaction with frequency beating.
