Critical Reception
Though now rare in pianists' repertoires, Lyapunov's Études Op. 11 were frequently played in the first half of the 20th century by famous performers like Vladimir Horowitz and Ferruccio Busoni.

Sergei Lyapunov came from a family of intellectuals, scientists, and artists; his father was a famous astronomer and mathematician, and his mother was an excellent amateur pianist.

Lyapunov's two brothers also became notable figures: Aleksandr (1857-1918) was a renowned mathematician, and Boris (1861-1943) was a respected linguist specializing in Slavic languages.
Compositional Technique
Lyapunov's Études Op. 11 were designed to 'complete' Liszt's Transcendental Studies by working on the sharp keys that Liszt had neglected.

Lyapunov was an ethnomusicologist who, with Fyodor Mikhailovich Istomin, collected over 300 Russian folk songs.

Etsuko Hirose, the pianist on this recording, began playing piano at age three and performed Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 26 with an orchestra at age six.

Lyapunov's Twelve Transcendental Études, Op. 11, are a tribute to Franz Liszt, who he considered his greatest master.
