Franz Liszt held Sgambati in high regard, commenting that Sgambati "begins from a point where many don't even manage to arrive!"

Composition History

Sgambati's Piano Concerto in G minor, Op. 15, composed between 1878 and 1880, was the first work of its kind in Italy during the second half of the 19th century.

Richard Wagner, already famous, encouraged his publisher Schott to publish Sgambati's two Quintets, praising him as a "true, great and original talent."

Composer's Artistic Vision

Sgambati championed the reassertion of 'pure music' values in Italy, returning to 17th and 18th-century forms and moving away from the dominant opera-centric taste.

Recording & Production

The overture to Pietro Cossa's 'Cola di Rienzo', long thought lost, is preserved in Rome and was performed and recorded for the first time for this album by conductor Fabrizio Ventura.
