The idea for this album originated from Maria du Toit's desire to perform Ivy Priaulx Rainier's Suite for Clarinet and Piano, a piece her teacher described as "hardly ever performed, but it's a great piece!".
Performer Biography
Maria du Toit, the South African clarinettist on this album, was the solo principal clarinet of the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra for 13 years.
Historical Context
For centuries, female composers were often overlooked and undervalued in classical music, as women were not encouraged or allowed to pursue careers in the field.
Performer Biography
Vera Kooper, the Dutch pianist on this album, co-founded the Delta Piano Trio in 2013, which has won numerous awards including the Anton Kersjes Prize in 2020.
Recording & Production
The album was recorded in November 2023 at MCO Studio 1 in Hilversum, The Netherlands, using high-quality equipment including Brüel & Kjær 4006 and Schoeps microphones.
Composition History
Many of the pieces on this album, though written by talented composers, are rarely played or recorded, with some having no existing recordings prior to this album.
