This album was recorded live at a concert in the Art Gallery of the Holburne Museum, Bath, on June 2, 2006, to mark the 110th Anniversary of the publication of A Shropshire Lad.

Benjamin Burrows, one of the composers, wrote nearly one hundred songs in 1927-28 while he was in love with a pupil, Jane Vowles, who was having singing lessons with him.

The piano used for this recording, a Steinway Model D Concert Grand No. 262453 (1930), was originally chosen by Sergei Rachmaninov for his British concerts.

Arthur Somervell has the distinction of being the first composer to set a cycle from Housman's A Shropshire Lad poems of 1896.
