Shura Cherkassky's mother, Lydia Schlemenson, was a pianist and pupil of Annette Essipov at the St Petersburg Conservatory, and was his first piano teacher.

The earliest recordings on Disc 1 include both acoustic and electric versions of the same pieces, due to Victor's transition to electrical recording in mid-1925.

The engineer for this album, Seth B. Winner, used CEDAR's RESPEED plugin to correct pitch instability in some recordings and RETOUCH to fix an awkward tape edit in the Chopin Fantasy.
