Sibelius's Piano Sonata in F major, Op. 12, is often criticized for 'unpianistic' writing, yet its tremolo figures are technically as advanced as those in Beethoven's 'Pathétique' Sonata.

Composer Biography
Jean Sibelius's first known composition was a piano piece called Ökenscen (Desert Scene) for children's theatre, though it has not survived.
Historical Context
The title of Sibelius's Marche triste (1899) alludes to the controversial 1898 Russian requirement for Finns to perform national service, which Tsar Nicholas II confirmed in 1901 despite protests.
