Sibelius's Symphony No. 5 was inspired by a flock of sixteen swans he witnessed soaring from Järvenpää lake, which profoundly affected him and became the symphony's main theme.

Witold Lutosławski's Concerto for Orchestra, written between 1950 and 1954, was based on folk melodies from Masovia, the region around Warsaw, and brought him back into official favor with Poland's Stalinist cultural administration.

Performer Biography

The London Philharmonic Orchestra, founded in 1932 by Sir Thomas Beecham, has been the Resident Symphony Orchestra at Southbank Centre's Royal Festival Hall since 1992 and Resident at Glyndebourne Festival Opera for over 40 years.

Jukka-Pekka Saraste, the conductor on this album, has served as Music Director of the Oslo Philharmonic since 2006 and Chief Conductor of the WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne since 2010.

Despite its popularity, Witold Lutosławski, the composer of the Concerto for Orchestra, considered it a 'marginal work' in his output, standing apart from his later development of new harmonic and textural techniques.
