Sir Adrian Boult, the conductor on this album, was the BBC Symphony Orchestra's Music Director from its inception in 1930 and its Permanent Conductor from the end of the first season.

Wozzeck, despite premiering in 1925, was still considered daringly confrontational in Britain in 1949 due to its subject and avant-garde musical language.
