The album was recorded in March 2018 at Skywalker Sound, a Lucasfilm Ltd company, located in Marin County, California, USA.
Interpretation
The album's concept originated from pianist Craig Terry's vision to give traditional Italian songs a different 'treatment' and expand to include American classics.
Compositional Technique
In the Baroque era, improvisation was a highly-prized skill for musicians, especially singers, who were expected to embellish 'da capo' arias on repeat performances.
Interpretation
The album features a blend of instrumentalists from various genres, including trumpet, flugelhorn, bandoneon, bass, and drums, alongside mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato and pianist Craig Terry.
Compositional Technique
Great American Songbook hits are rooted in jazz idioms and encourage performers to personalize them with new accompaniments and melodic twists.
Composer's Artistic Vision
The album explores the idea that 'love' and 'great songs' are inherently elusive but make a good combination, with all featured songs tackling the subject of love.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Stephen Sondheim, a renowned composer and lyricist, believed that 'poetry doesn't need music; lyrics do,' suggesting that simpler lyrics often soar poetically when set to music.
