1/7Composer's Artistic Vision
The album aims for experimental sonic experiences that are emotionally and intellectually compelling, rather than just sound effects or manipulation.
Compositional Technique
Electronics are an essential factor in the music, forcing the instrumentalists to expand their playing techniques and unfold their sound anew in each piece.
Recording & Production
All electronic sounds used in the compositions and improvisations on the album were generated and derived from the bassoon and saxophone played by the duo.
Album & Artwork
The album title, "soundspaces," is also the name of the duo performing the works, consisting of bassoonist Johannes Schwarz and saxophonist Sascha Armbruster.
Compositional Technique
The album features commissioned works by five composers, with Paul Frick contributing improvisational "bridges" titled "Schwelle 1-4" (Threshold 1-4).
Recording & Production
Sebastian Schottke, a recording engineer at the ZKM (Center for Arts and Media Technology) in Karlsruhe, played a central role in programming software, controlling live electronics, and sound design for the album.
Instruments
The combination of saxophone and bassoon is unusual due to their different construction, sound production, and overtone spectra.
