Performer Biography

Howard Shelley, the pianist and conductor on this album, has had a distinguished career since his 1971 London debut and often performs in the combined role of conductor and soloist.

Composition History

Steibelt's Piano Concerto No 3 in E major, 'L 'orage', Op 33, became his most celebrated work due to its instantly popular 'storm' finale.

Composer Biography

Steibelt abruptly left Paris in 1808 to escape his creditors, taking up a position as director of the French Opera in St Petersburg, where he remained until his death.

Compositional Technique

Steibelt often used pre-existing melodies in his slow movements, such as the Scottish folk tune 'Ye banks and braes o' bonnie Doon' in the Adagio of his Fifth Piano Concerto.

Daniel Steibelt, the composer, was born in Berlin to a French mother and a German father who was a keyboard manufacturer.

Compositional Technique

Steibelt's wife, an English pianist skilled on the tambourine, inspired him to add tambourine parts to many of his later works, including the 'Grand concerto militaire'.
