Johann Strauss I, born in Vienna in 1804, was initially apprenticed to a bookbinder before becoming a violinist and establishing his own dance orchestra in 1825.

Johann Strauss II, the most famous of the Strauss family, developed the classical Viennese waltz to such a high degree that it became suitable for both the concert hall and the ballroom.
