Composition History

Sir Arthur Sullivan's ballet score L'Île Enchantée debuted in 1864 as a divertissement at the end of Bellini's opera La sonnambula at Covent Garden.

Performer Biography

Andrew Penny, the conductor on this album, has made over 50 recordings for Naxos and Marco Polo labels since 1992, focusing on British Music, and was awarded the MBE for services to music in 2014.

Recording & Production

This album features the world premiere recording of Sir Arthur Sullivan's L'Île Enchantée, which was reconstructed from orchestral parts after the autograph score was lost.

Composition History

The ballet from Thespis, a collaboration between Sir Arthur Sullivan and W.S. Gilbert, was lost but has been rediscovered and reconstructed by Roderick Spencer and Selwyn Tillett.

The RTÉ Concert Orchestra, part of Ireland's national public service multimedia organisation, was voted World's Favourite Orchestra in 2015 and has performed with artists like Luciano Pavarotti and Lang Lang.

Composer Biography

Sir Arthur Sullivan, known for his collaborations with W.S. Gilbert, returned to England from his studies at the Leipzig Conservatory in 1861 and gained immediate recognition for his incidental music to Shakespeare's Tempest.
