Karol Szymanowski, born in 1882, grew up in Tymoszówka and Yelisavetgrad (now Kropyvnytskyi, Ukraine), which was then part of the Russian Empire.
Compositional Technique
The Études Op. 4, while technically demanding, also explore rhythmic complexities, such as simultaneous quaver triplets against normal quavers.

Szymanowski's family environment was highly artistic and multilingual, with regular music-making, literature, and science being common activities.
Critical Reception
Artur Rubinstein, a renowned pianist and friend of Szymanowski, was amazed by the Préludes Op. 1, calling them the "composition of a master" upon first sight.
