Tchaikovsky was financially and morally supported by Nadezhda von Meck, a rich widow whom he never met, allowing him to resign from the Conservatory in 1878.

The initial response to Tchaikovsky's ballet The Sleeping Beauty was cool, receiving only faint praise from the Tsar, and it only gradually gained favor.
