Tchaikovsky explicitly described the musical content of his Fourth Symphony in a letter to Nadezhda von Meck, stating that the first movement expresses "the whole of life is merely a constant alternation of grim reality with illusory dreams of happiness."
Performer Biography
Paavo Järvi, the conductor, studied percussion and conducting in his native Tallinn, Estonia, when it was part of the Soviet Union, before emigrating to the USA with his family in 1980.

This album was recorded at Tonhalle Maag, Zurich, with Symphony No. 4 recorded in October 2019 and Symphony No. 2 recorded in January 2020.

Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 4 was composed during a "fateful time" in his life (1877-1878), when he received financial support from patroness Nadezhda von Meck and entered a difficult marriage with Antonina Miliukova, which led to a suicide attempt.
Performer Biography
Paavo Järvi continued his studies in Los Angeles with Leonard Bernstein and has held important international posts, including Principal Conductor of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and Chief Conductor of the NHK Symphony Orchestra (Tokyo).
Critical Reception
Tchaikovsky's Symphonies Nos. 4-6 are performed much more frequently than his first three, with Symphony No. 4 having been performed over 60 times by the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich since 1908, compared to Symphony No. 2's ten performances by 2020.
