The ballet Le Pavillon d'Armide, with music by Nikolay Tcherepnin, opened Diaghilev's first Paris season.
Performer Biography
Henry Shek, the conductor, was engaged as assistant conductor for the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra and the New Symphony Orchestra in Japan immediately after graduating with distinction.
Notable Performances
The ballet Le Pavillon d'Armide was originally a graduation ballet for 1907, featuring a virtuoso part for Vaslav Nijinsky as Armida's favourite slave.
Compositional Technique
The ballet's score includes a Variation section where the celesta is used, an instrument Tchaikovsky introduced to Russian ballet about 15 years prior.
