Telemann: Ouverture & Concerti pour Darmstadt (Alpha Collection)
3/31/2015, 24 Tracks, 1:10:22

The library at Darmstadt holds the largest collection of works by Telemann, many of which survived thanks to meticulous copies made by Kapellmeister Christoph Graupner and his deputy Samuel Endler.
Despite his Europe-wide reputation in his own time, Telemann's return to favor since the 1980s has been tinged with condescension, even from some of his enthusiastic supporters.
Alexis Kossenko, the conductor and flauto traverso soloist on this album, plays a flauto traverso made by Martin Wenner, copied after J. J. Quantz, Potsdam, 1740.
Christoph Graupner, a Kapellmeister and admirer of Telemann, regularly commissioned works from him to supply the repertory for his excellent court ensemble at Darmstadt.
Zefira Valova, the solo violinist, plays a violin made by Tomaso & Lorenzo, Florence, 1760, which was made available by the Jumpstart Junior Foundation.
Telemann described his own music as being in "French, Italian, and Polish garb," reflecting the diverse influences in his compositions.
