1/7Performer Biography
Simon Standage, the director and violin soloist of Collegium Musicum 90, was awarded the Georg-Philipp-Telemann-Preis in 2010 for his efforts in promoting Telemann's reputation through recordings.
Historical Context
During his time as Hofkapellmeister in Sorau (1705-1708), Telemann assiduously studied 'le goût français' (the French taste) because his patron, Count Erdmann von Promnitz, preferred French music.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Telemann's musical style is eclectic, combining influences from Italian, German, French, and Polish folk music, which he described as having 'true barbaric beauty'.
Composition History
Some of the works on this album were composed by Telemann in his 86th year for Landgrave Ludwig VIII of Darmstadt's name-day celebration, despite his declining vision.
Instruments
The recording features period instruments, including violins from the 17th and 18th centuries, and a harpsichord modelled after a 1679 Flemish instrument.
Recording & Production
Simon Standage, the director, generously invested his prize money from the Georg-Philipp-Telemann-Preis into funding this recording.
Composer Biography
Despite his vast output, only eighteen autograph scores of instrumental music by Georg Philipp Telemann (the composer) are known to exist.
