1/6Composer's Artistic Vision
The commissioned composers were given complete freedom, without leitmotifs or guidelines, to explore and portray the Basque Country through their individual artistic personalities.
Album & Artwork
The album's title, "Tesela" (Tessera), refers to the eight brief compositions as individual pieces that, when juxtaposed, form a broad mosaic of contemporary creation.
Composition History
The album "Tesela" celebrates the 30th anniversary of the Basque National Orchestra by commissioning eight internationally renowned composers to create works reflecting their unique vision of the Basque Country and its culture.
Cultural Impact
The project aimed to fill a gap in the repertoire by commissioning non-Basque composers to write works inspired by Basque culture, offering an 'external observer's gaze'.
Critical Reception
Some of the works from the "Tesela" project, such as Ivan Fedele's Txalaparta and Peter Eötvös's The Gliding of the Eagle in the Skies, have already achieved international recognition.
Recording & Production
This album features live recordings made at the Kursaal Auditorium in San Sebastián during the Basque National Orchestra's 2011/2012 and 2012/2013 subscription seasons.
