Composition History
This album presents a unique document in words and sounds created by Lukas Ligeti, an internationally renowned percussionist and composer, during his 2015 artist-in-residence at Warsaw's POLIN Museum.
Recording & Production
The music on this CD is intended to be listened to as one continuous piece, with a total duration of just under 45 minutes.
Composer Biography
Lukas Ligeti, the composer, draws inspiration from European classical tradition, jazz, New York's 'Downtown' experimental music, and various African music traditions.
Interpretation
Musicians were asked to respond intuitively to the interview excerpts they heard through headphones, continuing the conversation with their own musical means.
Compositional Technique
The composition incorporates memories from interviews with people aged 20 to 98, including songs they sang, which were then precisely notated and fed to musicians via headphones.
Instruments
Lukas Ligeti performs on the Marimba Lumina, an electronic instrument designed by Donald Buchla, and has given solo electronic percussion concerts on five continents.
