Performer Biography

Aksel Schiøtz, the tenor on this album, was discovered by His Master's Voice, London, in 1938.

Composition History

The recording of Schumann's Dichterliebe with Folmer Jensen was thought lost for 55 years until copper matrices were discovered at Nationaldiskoteket, Aarhus.

Historical Context

Denmark was seized by Hitler on April 9th, 1940, which postponed Aksel Schiøtz's international career in Lied and oratorio.

Recording & Production

Most of Aksel Schiøtz's recordings were originally issued on LPs, but this CD series features fresh and clean restorations made from fine early pressings by Andrew Walter at EMI Abbey Road Studios.

Interpretation

A unique aspect of Aksel Schiøtz's singing is that there is never the slightest discolouration of vowels, and consonants are distinct but not emphasized, making speech sounds natural.

Historical Context

In 1943, it was not advisable to issue a Danish record set with German lieder due to the Danish people's aversion to German culture during the war, so Dichterliebe had to wait.

Performer Biography

Aksel Schiøtz survived a major acoustic operation in 1946, which left half his face lame, but he managed a comeback recital in 1948 through sheer will-power.
