Claude Debussy, under the name M. Croche, considered Duparc's songs 'perfect', while Maurice Ravel thought them 'imperfect...but works of genius'.

Duparc stopped composing in 1885 at the age of 37 due to a nervous disorder, but lived for another 48 years, orchestrating and tinkering with his existing songs.
